Statistics reveal the shocking suicide rate

-

THE Office for National Statistics (ONS) published data recently showing that male suicide rates had hit a twodecade high. It went on to say that males accounted for three quarters of suicide deaths in 2019.

At highest risk are men between the ages of 45-49. Shockingly, suicide is the highest cause of death for children and young people between 10-19 years, according to Mental Health England.

Many people have had family members, or friends, who have taken their own life. It is devastating. Two close friends of mine chose to take their own lives.

The feeling of ‘if only’ never seems to leave you and I still struggle to understand why.

I also remember the words of Robin Williams, who tragically took his own life; he said that “suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems”.

Though not all suicides are mental health-related a significant proportion of people who committed have sought mental health services in the 12 months before their death.

Volunteers from Samaritans have said the reasons people have given for calling their helpline ranged from financial difficulties, losing their job, being homeless and not being

able to support their family.

The Covid-19 crisis seems to have only worsened this situation. Official data suggests that during the pandemic rates have been lower. Of course, this could be due to delays in inquests. It takes about five months to hold an inquest usually so the official number of suicides is still unknown.

What is needed is more support. People need help before they reach a crisis point. Suicide prevention support is available within the health service. However, it is about recognising the signs and trying to get the right support.

More funding for struggling services dealing with mental health, and more awareness, is

needed to enable people to get the support they need.
