LES MISERABLES (15)

★★★★★

THIS thriller lights the fuse on civil unrest in housing projects where Victor Hugo penned and partially set his novel, Les Miserables. Stephane (Damien Bonnard) joins the AntiCrime Squad in a Paris suburb. He shadows Chris (Alexis Manenti) and Gwada (Djebril Zonga), who bend the law to get results. Romany circus ringmaster Zorro (Raymond Lopez) threatens violence against The Mayor (Steve Tientcheu) unless a stolen lion cub is returned within 24 hours. Police apprehend the thief, a boy, which brings about a mob of stone-throwing adolescents.

■ Download/stream and on DVD from November 30.

THE SNOW QUEEN: MIRRORLANDS (U)

★★★★★

COMPUTER-ANIMATED sequel. Following the banishment of the Snow Queen (voiced by Samia Mounts) to the MirrorLands, King Harald (Marc Thompson) woos magical citizens and tricks them into passing through a one-way portal to the frozen wilderness. Store owner Vegard (Tom Wayland), wife Una (Vanessa Gardner) and their son Kai (Jason Griffith) fall for the duplicity, leaving behind non-magical daughter Gerda (Laurie Hymes). In the MirrorLands, a Shaman (Thompson again) separates the Snow Queen’s spirit from her body as a spectral companion for Gerda.

■ Download/stream and available on DVD from November 30.

AN AMERICAN PICKLE (12)

★★★★★

THIS fish-out-of-water comedy boasts two Seth Rogens for the price of one. In 1919, Jewish ditch digger Herschel Greenbaum (Seth Rogen) falls in love with Sarah (Sarah Snook) in his eastern European homeland. They marry and Herschel finds work killing rats at the Capital Pickle Co. A freak accident sends him tumbling into a large vat of brined cucumbers on the same day the premises are condemned. One hundred years later, Herschel reawakens, perfectly preserved without ageing a day. He meets his great-grandson, app developer Ben (Rogen again), who introduces Herschel to 21st-century New York.

■ Download/stream from November 30 and available on DVD from December 7.
