Chess WITH THE KNIGHT

-

ON Tuesday the 24th of November, the fixtures of the 4th round (of five) of the North Eastern On-line Chess League were played.

Again, all twenty teams took part, all with a full complement of players.

Some sceptics who doubted that this innovative format would work..."it's not like over the board games where you can see your opponent...it is too easy for people to cheat"...have been proved wrong.

It does work! Having played myself in all four rounds, I will admit that I was not totally enthused about playing online, but I have warmed to it, despite my mediocre results, D L L D.

Not seeing your opponent, and looking at a screen rather than a board, are the downsides but the upsides are more significant. You are playing the game, enjoying the challenge and competition, going over the game afterwards, learning (hopefully!), sharing thoughts about the game, much the same as after the traditional over the board match.

I would encourage those people who have temporarily dropped out of chess to give it a go.

I understand that another similar competition will take place after Christmas and the organiser and inspiration for this event, Tim Wall, is keen to expand the leagues if possible.
