IN THIS bold and offbeat rites-of-passage comedy-drama, 16-year-old schoolgirl Milla Finlay (Eliza Scanlen) should have the world at her feet. Instead, she is bravely contending with cancer treatment and the realisation that she may die without experiencing the pangs of love.
That changes on a train platform when Moses (Toby Wallace) tries to fleece her for money to feed his drug habit. Wise to his motivation, Milla obliges, setting in motion a fiery romance. Milla’s parents (Ben Mendelsohn, Essie Davis) resign themselves to Moses’s presence so Milla can spend her last moments adrift on adolescent bliss.

THE Motherland is an enchanted realm where fairy godmothers train so they can be released into the mortal realm and grant the wishes of the most deserving. Godmother-in-training Eleanor (Jillian Bell) is shocked to learn that her beloved profession is under threat of extinction.
The rookie resolves to prove that the world will always need her kind’s wand-waving expertise.
She discovers a waylaid letter from a 10-year-old girl called Mackenzie Walsh. Eleanor tracks down the sender and learns that Mackenzie (Isla Fisher) is now a 40-year-old working single mum. Widowed four years ago, Mackenzie no longer believes in the possibility of enduring romantic love. Eleanor attempts to bring happiness into Mackenzie’s life.

AGEING woodcarver Geppetto (Roberto Benigni) lives hand to mouth in a 19th century Tuscan community. When a travelling puppet theatre owned by Mangiafuoco (Gigi Proietti) pitches a big top on the edge of town, Geppetto fashions a puppet out of a trunk of enchanted wood and christens his creation Pinocchio (Federico Ielapi).
The inquisitive scamp sneaks out of class to attend the puppet show and becomes a prisoner of Mangiafuoco. He escapes with five gold coins, which sly Wolf (Massimo Ceccherini) and conniving Cat (Rocco Papaleo) plot to steal. Pinocchio is a fantastical feast for the senses.
