Heed hope to Spa-rkle in clash of form sides

- By JEFF BOWRON

GATESHEAD will look to stretch their unbeaten run to six games at Leamington tomorrow.

It is a clash between the top two in the Vanarama National League North form table.

Wednesday’s postponement at Darlington has given the Heed a week’s grace ahead of the trip to the Midlands.

A hat-trick of wins has propelled Gateshead into fifth place, the Brakes unbeaten in seven.

Leamington have won two of their five home games and trail the Heed by three points.

The Darlington call-off means only goalkeeper James Montgomery misses the trip to the Spa town.

Player-manager Mike Williamson, yet to feature in any of the Tynesiders 10 games, has had another week of training.

A confident Williamson, who wants to extend striker Ged Garner’s loan from Fleetwood Town until the end of January, said: “Winning always helps but it is a tight group and everyone is in good spirits.

“We know it is going to be a relentless season with the lockdowns and things like that to navigate through.

“We have the squad, have the character and are in a good period at the moment. We have momentum but must keep building and not move away from the basics.”

Gateshead assistant manager Ian Watson believes both sides will be full of confidence tomorrow.

He said: “Leamington are in a really good run of form and have picked up good results.

“It is going to be a tough game for us but they are probably thinking the same thing.

“We are playing some very good stuff and have put some decent wins together, so it is going to be a good game.”
