Former TV presenter dies at 89

FORMER Tyne Tees Television presenter Neville Wanless has died aged 89.

Mr Wanless worked for ITV Tyne Tees for more than 30 years as a presenter and continuity announcer.

Many will be familiar with Mr Wanless’ smooth voice from bulletins, introducin­g programmes and reading out birthday greetings to young viewers in the region.

Tyne Tees confirmed Mr Wanless died in North Tyneside General Hospital on Friday. His wife Pat and daughter Melanie were by his side.

The Wallsend-born presenter trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, where he won awards for

elocution, verse speaking and acting. He started his career for the BBC Home Service and Radio 4.

Mr Wanless joined Tyne Tees in 1971, working as a newsreader and continuity announcer. Rising to Senior Announcer and Head of Presentati­on, he continued working for Tyne Tees until 1991.

Mr Wanless also worked on radio for Radio Tees, Great North

Radio, Century and Radio Tyneside.

Tyne Tees TV paid tribute to its former employee.

The broadcaste­r said: “We are sad to announce the death of our former colleague Neville Wanless, who has passed away in hospital.

“Mr Wanless was a well known and well loved part of the Tyne Tees presenting team for more than 30 years.

“He was a regular continuity announcer, as well as a presenter on our programmes. His television career also included acting roles in Spender and A Nightingal­e Sings.

“The Tyne Tees team send our love and deepest condolence­s.”
