Tributes left at site where man, 18, died

FLOWERS have been left in tribute to an 18-year-old who lost his life in a collision in Gateshead.

Police received a report of a crash on the A694 at Derwenthau­gh Park, Blaydon, at the junction with Swalwell Cricket Club, shortly before 10pm on Saturday, December 12.

Critical care nurses who came across the collision worked hard to save the man until paramedics arrived to take over.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Now, bouquets of white and yellow flowers have been left at the entrance to the Swalwell Cricket Club in memory of the young man who died. The floral tributes have been attached to the sign just metres from where the crash happened on Saturday evening.

The man who died has not yet been named but officers have been supporting his family.

The driver of the car and all the passengers remained at the scene and have been assisting officers with the investigat­ion.

Sergeant Matt Sykes, of Northumbri­a Police’s motor patrols department, said: “This collision has devastatin­gly resulted in the death of an 18-year-old man.

“Our thoughts are with the young man’s family at this incredibly difficult time and they will continue to be supported by our specialist officers.

He added: “An investigat­ion has been launched and we are committed to establishi­ng the circumstan­ces surroundin­g this incident.

“I am now appealing to anybody who was in the area around that time to come forward with any informatio­n or dashcam footage, as it may prove crucial in determinin­g the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the collision.”
