New Year is still set to go off with a bang - and with a clap

NEWCASTLE residents have been urged to see in the new year safely from home - while showing their appreciation for frontline workers.

Due to Covid-19, Newcastle City Council has been forced to alter its usual New Year’s Eve celebrations - but organisers say the city will still be able to celebrate in style.

At 6.00 on Thursday, people are invited to come out on to their doorsteps to join a citywide clap for all those working on the frontline during the pandemic.

As residents clap, a barrage of fireworks will be set off from undisclosed locations around the city, the idea being they should fill the sky enough to be seen from most homes.

Stephen Patterson, director of communications at NE1 Ltd, who have worked with Newcastle City Council to organise the New Year festivities, said: “Stay home, stay safe and let us bring the fireworks to you.

“All we ask is you join us on your doorstep at 6.00 on New Year’s Eve to watch the display and to join in a doorstep clap for the city and to herald in the New Year.

“This year we have had to do the celebrations differently but we hope people will enjoy the festivities from the comfort of their own homes.”

Councillor Ged Bell, cabinet member for employment and culture said: “Our city always welcomes in the New Year in style and I am delighted we are still able to do it this year but in a Covid-safe way.

“I will be standing on my doorstep clapping with my neighbours and I encourage everyone else to do the same.

“As ever I urge you to keep safe and remember - hands, face, space.”

Meanwhile, a planned Laser Light City installation, which was to light up city landmarks, has been postponed until 2021.

There will be no firework displays in the city centre on New Year’s Eve and people are urged to stay at home with their own households or bubbles.
