United prepare to face ’angry’ champions

-

JURGEN Klopp says his Liverpool players are feeling “angry” as they prepare for tomorrow night’s clash with Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The Premier League meeting is set to unfold amid supporter unrest on Tyneside.

Fans have been left fuming by the limp display in the League Cup against Brentford, a defeat which cost the Magpies a first semi-final in the competition since 1976.

United will face a Liverpool outfit struggling with injuries - but Klopp is more interested in results.

After Sunday’s 1-1 draw with West Brom he said: “We should have won the game, or we wanted to win the game and we did not and now we are all ‘depressed’ or whatever.

“The boys are more angry than anything else because they know it was not perfect - but now we have to play again in three days.

“We don’t live in dreamland and just win football matches because we want to win them.

“We have to work for it and we have to play for it and we have to finish the situations off.

“In the end, we just drew a Premier League game, that can happen.

“It can happen against West Brom, they had a new manager (Sam Allardyce) and they played a system in the first half which I have not seen a lot of in my life, a 6-4-0 or whatever.

“That is completely fine, they have challenges to stay this kind of disciplined for the rest of the season.”

Klopp added: “We have to be disciplined as well, in a different way. We have to do both, being offensive, active, creative and defend.

“That is what we have to do and we could have done that better. ”

Champions Liverpool will be without defender Joel Matip for the clash against the Magpies.

Klopp reflected: “Joel is injured and it is not the first time a centre-half has been injured.

“It is of course not good as he was in a really good shape again, but we cannot change that.

“We just have to accept it and carry on.”
