Nelson’s message to his Spartans: It is Al to play for tomorrow

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

BLYTH Spartans manager Michael Nelson has urged his players to grasp the opportunity which lies in wait when they host fellow strugglers Alfreton Town tomorrow.

The Derbyshire outfit arrives at Croft Park sat six points and one place ahead of bottom-of-the-table Spartans, who head into the game looking for only their second league win of the season.

Nelson boosted his ranks over the festive period with North Shields striker Dan Wilson and Chesterfield duo Jamie Sharman and Jack McKay all joining on loan.

The trio will all be available to feature against the Reds as Spartans look to move on from the 6-0 hammering they suffered in their last game at Darlington.

Nelson believes that heavy defeat against the Quakers is “out of the system” for his players as he challenged them to get their 2021 fixtures off to a winning start.

He said: : “Saturday is a good opportunity to go out and put in a good performance – especially with what happened in our last game at Darlington.

“It is a big game for us because of where the two sides are in the table, so if we pick up a win and pull them in closer it is a positive step.

“The players seem all right at the minute and we have been chatting with them as individuals and in the Whatsapp group.

“We had them on Thursday night for training and they seem in good spirits.

“We have spoken about the Darlington game and that seems to be out of the system for a lot of them now.

“The new lads have added something to the group and they will be available so things are positive despite how the table looks.

“We will have a good go on Saturday and hopefully claim the win we have been looking for.”
