We really have to win again, admits Bruce

FRESHENED-UP TOON TARGET SEEMINGLY DOOMED BLADES

STEVE Bruce is hoping that Newcastle United get back to winning ways against Sheffield United.

His team have now gone a month without experiencing a victory and face a Blades side who haven’t got a win to their name all season.

Bruce is expected to ring the changes at Bramall Lane and will recall Fabian Schar, Karl Darlow and Federico Fernandez, while Jonjo Shelvey – who scored in the corresponding fixture last term – and Callum Wilson are also expected back.

Bruce (right) said: “The key to it is recovery as the games come thick and fast now.

“It’s very difficult but we will do our best we can to recover and hopefully we will have some fit bodies back.

“We’re getting there with the problems that we’ve had. Hopefully we will have a freshness about us.

“It doesn’t come any tougher than Man City, Liverpool, Leicester and Arsenal. We’ve had a run of difficult games.

“In 90 minutes at

Arsenal we drew the game and we drew against Liverpool, while we were in the game for long stages against Leicester.

“We did OK at Man City. We have to turn these decent performances around now, score some goals and win a couple of games again.” New c a s t l e fans have been deeply unhappy with results lately and the Magpies have slumped to 15th in the table. Bruce added: “You are always judged on results. Unfortunately we have not had enough good ones.

“Certainly with who we’ve had to play the fixture schedule was unkind.

“But that’s the Premier League and you’ve got to play everybody twice. This run of games has been difficult.”

Bruce was then asked about changes and said: “We have Karl Darlow, Fab Schar and Fede Fernandez back and we hope we will have bodies to give us that freshness.

“With Jamaal Lascelles we had to see how he went, that is what we are stabbing in the dark about.

“It’s not like a groin strain, it’s after-affects of what he had [Covid19]. To be fair to the lad he was down on his feet [at Arsenal], but it’s good to get 45 minutes under his belt.”
