Rose is still blooming with Spurs ‘kids’

- By CIARAN KELLY

DANNY Rose was eyeing up a loan move to Newcastle United a year ago in a bid to keep himself in contention for Euro 2020.

However, 12 months on, the Spurs’ defender has now earned praise from Jose Mourinho for making a ‘good contribution’ to the ‘kids’ team’.

It has been a strange year for Rose, who proactively told his agent that he wanted to move to St James’ Park last January after Jetro Willems suffered a serious knee injury in the Magpies’ 1-0 win against Chelsea.

The left-back, who had fallen out of favour at Spurs following Mourinho’s appointment two months previously, went on to spend the second half of last season on Tyneside.

Newcastle ultimately decided against making the 30-year-old’s loan move permanent and the black-and-whites instead signed Jamal Lewis from Norwich City for £13.5m.

Having failed to secure a move away last summer, despite interest from clubs abroad, Rose was left out of Mourinho’s 25-man Premier League squad.

Rose has been keeping fit by playing with Spurs’ under-23s as he enters the final months of his contract but the former England international faces a race against time to secure a move away before the transfer window shuts.

“I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t know,” Mourinho told reporters when asked if he expected Rose to leave this month.

“He has been working with the under-23s, playing sometimes with them and playing well the couple of times I watched him.

“He’s made a good contribution for the kids’ team and the kids’ development but I don’t know what is going to happen in the market.”
