A TEENAGER has avoided a stint behind bars after he swung a wooden bat during a street brawl in North Tynside.

Police descended on an area of North Shields after a “large fight” between two groups of males was seen on CCTV.

When they arrived, Tyler Davison was found in an address on the street and immediately admitted to being one of the men involved.

The 19-year-old told officers he had armed himself with a wooden bat to “warn off” his partner’s ex, who was brandishing a bottle.

Davison, of Saville Street in North Shields, appeared before magistrates in North Tyneside earlier this month and pleaded guilty to a public order offence and possessing an offensive weapon in public.

The case was adjourned for the preparation of a pre-sentence report and the teenager appeared in the same court on Wednesday to learn his fate.

He was spared an immediate prison

sentence and instead was ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work as part of an 18-month community order.

The court heard police were called to Saville Street on December 19 last year after watching CCTV of the area and seeing a large fight erupt.

Leanne Duffy, prosecuting, said: “Upon arrival they took details and, acting upon information, they attended an address on Saville Street where the defendant was in the sitting room.

“He told the officers he had been involved in an incident outside with his partner’s ex boyfriend.”

Mark Harrison, defending, said Davison had immediately admitted his part in the brawl and fully co-operated with the police.

He added: “Perhaps a canny defendant might have said nothing.

“All the parties outside were as culpable as each other.

“The ex-boyfriend came brandishing a bottle and throwing items.

“Mr Davison has armed himself with a bat with the sole intention of warning-off the ex boyfriend.

“He acknowledges he should have run inside and phoned the police.”
