Ouseburn attraction is being neglected

-

THE Ouseburn basin is undergoing a huge transformation including the near completion of a large apartment block and many other smaller developments for accommodation and commercial purposes. In addition to an ever-increasing number of residents the area is attracting an increasing number of visitors.

Sadly one of the attractions of the area, the Ouseburn stream, is being neglected due to the inoperative Barrage.

This was built after a careful study with ‘the aim of improving water quality and appearance along the river and impounded at a height of 2.6 metres above ordinance datum’. Additionally to promote easier navigation, greater bio-diversity and a better environment for wildlife.

At the present time when the river Tyne is at low tide the flow of water in the Ouseburn is reduced to a trickle and the water has the appearance of a sewer outlet and in no way fulfills the initial objectives of the barrage!

The sponsors of the barrage included Newcastle City Council, Tynewear partners, Bridging Newcastle Gateshead, and One North East. I wonder how these bodies feel about the run down appearance of the barrage and its non-operation!

On another note, has any consideration been given to the installation of a footbridge across the stream to connect the north and south banks allowing easy access for residents and visitors to this very attractive part of Newcastle.
