Keeper stays put to battle relegation

- By JEFF BOWRON

GATESHEAD goalkeeper James Montgomery has extended his stay at Southend United.

The Heed shot-stopper initially joined the League Two strugglers on an emergency 7-day loan last week.

The 26-year-old conceded only one goal, a penalty, in his first two games for the Shrimpers at Cheltenham and Oldham.

Last night the Wearsider made his home bow against Sunderland’s Football League Trophy final opponents Tranmere Rovers.

Montgomery could also be between the posts again on Saturday when Southend take on Stevenage at Roots Hall.

First-choice keeper Mark Oxley is currently sidelined with a groin problem, replacement, Portsmouth loanee Alex Bass then suffering a hairline fracture in his foot.

That brought the call to arms for Montgomery, who has Football League experience from his time at Forest Green Rovers.

Montgomery said: “It was frustrating the way the season at Gateshead was curtailed due to the pandemic.

“Everyone was in the same boat, but when the chance came for a short-term loan at Southend I jumped at the chance. It’s good to be playing back in the EFL again and hopefully I can help them in their attempt to avoid relegation.”

Southend are in real danger of losing their Football League status and drop into non-league football for the first time in a century.

Montgomery rejoined Gateshead in the summer but for the third year running was hampered by injury.

Tynesiders boss Mike Williamson is keen to retain his services, something that may be harder if he excels on the south coast.

Williamson said: “Monty is a quality goalkeeper and this is a good opportunity for him, one that will boost his profile.

“Playing in the EFL again will be a good experience for him, but we are keen to keep him at the club.”
