Bingo hall plans set to bring a lotto jobs
COUNCIL SET TO SUPPORT REDEVELOPMENT SCHEME
PLANS to convert a derelict Whitley Bay bingo hall into a drinking, eating and shopping destination are set to be given the green light.
Carlton Club Ltd is behind plans to revamp the former bingo hall of the same name into a venue boasting a cocktail bar and restaurant, with space for pop-up shops and a wedding suite.
If the plans are given the goahead, the developer will carry out a range of renovations on the building, which also used to be known as the Empress Ballroom, including a new entrance and installing two upper floors to be used as shops.
A design and access statement submitted to North Tyneside Council claimed the development would “enhance” the adjoining Spanish City.
The council’s planning department has backed the proposals.
Its report said: “Overall, it is considered the proposed works are appropriate for the application site and will not result in any significant harm to the character and appearance of the host building, the wider Spanish City complex or the significance of the listed building itself.”
Ward councillor John O’Shea welcomed the plans, saying they would bring significant investment to the sea front.
He said: “For many local residents the refurbishment of the building is well overdue as it has been deteriorating during the last few years.
“It will also introduce into the area a number of additional hospitality choices.
“The refurbishment of the heritage features of the former Empress Ballroom will bring back memories for local residents who remember with fondness the ballroom in the its heyday.
“I am really pleased council planning officers are recommending the application be approved.
“I hope members of the planning committee accept this recommendation, which will bring significant investment to Whitley Bay seafront.
“New jobs will be created and the new facility will bring another visitor attraction to the town.”
The authority’s planning committee will vote on the proposals next Tuesday.
