Heed hope Nelson is an admirable signing
GATESHEAD have made their first signing since the vote to null and void Vanarama National League North.
It is one for the future for the Heed who have handed Academy prospect Nelson Ogbewe a two-yearcontract.
The 18-year-old made a brief cameo appearance off the bench for Gateshead in their FA Trophy defeat against Farsley Celtic in December.
While the Tynesiders normally hand out one-year contracts they have recognised the striker’s potential with a longer deal.
Player-manager Mike Williamson said: “Nelson has masses of potential and the right mentality.
“He is definitely someone we want to work with closely and we look forward to see how he progresses.
“He is a big strong lad and will be able to cope with the physicality.
“There is a lot of room for improvement but he has the desire to score goals and a willingness to work hard.”
Ogbewe is delighted to sign his first professional contract and be part of Gateshead’s first team squad.
He said: “I want to make as many appearances as I can next season, even if it is off the bench. I am excited to get started and show the coaches and the fans what I am capable of.”
Another rising Heed star, Danny Greenfield, has been handed a twoweek trial at League One neighbours Sunderland.
Last season was a breakthrough one for the 20-year-old former Manchester United and Barnsley youth player.
Goalkeeper James Montgomery, meanwhile, played his fourth game on loan at League Two relegation battlers Southend at the weekend. The Wearsider kept his second clean sheet for the struggling Shrimpers in a 0-0 draw with Stevenage at Roots Hall.
■ THE Northumberland Football Association has confirmed this season’s Techflow Marine Senior Cup will not resume, writes MARK CARRUTHERS.
In a statement, the NFA revealed a number of their County Cup competitions will still go ahead – but their most prominent competition will not be included.
This season’s Senior Cup had reached the quarter-final stage without Newcastle United Under23s and National League North club Blyth Spartans after they chose to withdraw from the competition.
However, Northern Premier League side Morpeth Town and Northern League clubs Ashington, Heaton Stannington, Newcastle Benfield, Newcastle University, North Shields, West Allotment Celtic and Whitley Bay all had high hopes of reaching this year’s showdown.
