MURDER accused Paul Robson told police in a statement “I can’t believe she’s dead” after being arrested over the death of teacher Caroline Kayll.

Cage fighter Robson is alleged to have murdered ex-partner Caroline after finding out she had been in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy, who he is alleged to have tried to kill.

Robson, who met Caroline while she worked at HMP Northumberland, where he was an inmate, denies murdering and blackmailing her and attempting to murder the youth and is standing trial at Newcastle Crown Court.

After his arrest following the alleged attack at Caroline’s home in Linton, Northumberland, Robson refused to answer police questions but provided a prepared statement, through his solicitor.

In it, he said: “When I heard about Caroline’s death I intended to arrange to surrender to the police.

“I’m emotionally spent, I’m finding it difficult to concentrate and my head is all over the place.

“I never intended to kill anyone. I can’t believe she is dead, I can’t believe she’s gone.

“The whole thing is like a nightmare, a bad dream, I can’t believe the situation, I can’t believe she’s not here. I’m so tired and devastated.”

Referring to events at Foxcover, Linton, on the night of November 15 last year, he continued: “I recall going to her house, she let me in, we were arguing.

“I was hit from behind on my head and back then I fell forward.

“I recall feeling something round my throat. I was feeling all sorts of emotions.

“I remember being dazed and feeling scared. It just felt everything was unravelling.

“When I learned Caroline was dead I contacted my solicitor.

“I feel broken. My solicitor has arranged for me to be assessed by a psychiatrist.

“I hope to be assessed to make sense of what happened here.

“In all the circumstances I’m not in a position to sensibly answer any questions.”

The jury were taken through a sequence of events, comprising CCTV and phone records, on the day of the alleged murder.

In the afternoon, Caroline was texting the boy professing her love after he became annoyed about her meeting a male friend for a walk.

She told him “You’re wrong it was a walk with a friend who just lost his wife. I told you I’ve nothing to hide from you. Please don’t do this. It’s you I want to be with, no one else.”

Caroline added in a text: “I want to be with you, I love being with you.” He replied: “Aye believe you loads.”

She then said: “I want you” and “I’m breaking my heart here, please (youth’s name).”

She repeated that there was no one else and that she loves him and wants to be with him and asks to meet up.

There followed an exchange in which she said “I love the bones of you”, “I adore you” and “you know I love you”.

The youth told her to “love someone else” and she replied that she wants him.

She added: “I want to be with you, no-one else.

I worship you, you know I do.” Meanwhile, that afternoon in Glasgow, CCTV shows Robson at Homebase, where he buys two bottles of ammonia for £6.50 then, in a separate transaction, he buys a wrench, pliers and screwdriver set for £32. CCTV shows that by around 4pm, Caroline and the youth are together at her home then they leave to get fuel at Asda in Ashington.

Footage shows Robson has started his journey to the North East and he is seen at a service station.

Robson arrives in the street at 8.05pm and is picked up on various pieces of footage moving around the house and surrounding area.

At 8.21pm he gets through a back gate.

Shortly after that, jurors have been told, witnesses heard a female voice shouting “Get out of here”.

The sound of bangs are then heard.

Some 24 minutes after he gets through the back gate, Robson is seen coming out of Caroline’s house, using, prosecutors say, the front door.

He goes to a neighbour’s house, they return to Caroline’s house, then Robson leaves. Robson, 49, of Stanley Street, Howdon, Wallsend, denies murder, attempted murder and blackmail. The trial continues.
