Matty looks set to Bond with United

-

NEWCASTLE United have completed the signing of England under-18 left-back Matty Bondswell after he terminated his deal with RB Leipzig.

The 18-year-old began his career at Nottingham Forest before moving to Germany and is now on the cusp of a move to St James’ Park.

The Magpies beat off competition from West Ham and Leeds and Bondswell has officially become a Newcastle player.

Bondswell began his career at the City Ground with Nottingham Forest before moving to Germany in 2018 to join RB Leipzig.

The left-back joined Dutch club Dordrecht earlier this season but struggled for minutes.

It was announced Bondswell’s temporary deal had been cut short in January with the defender having made seven appearances.

West Ham were credited with an interest in Bondswell during the January window but no deal materialised.

Chelsea and Leeds are also thought to have held an interest in the youngster.

It has also been suggested Bondswell turned down the chance to move to Manchester United before moving to Leipzig, highlighting his desire to play first-team football on a regular basis.

While Steve Bruce has not directly addressed the links to Bondswell, the Newcastle boss has admitted his club will not be making any big transfers in the summer.

He said recently: “I think what you are going to see, especially during the pandemic, is that we have not seen many big transfers and I cannot see things changing in the summer.

“So I think it will be the same again I would have thought.

“There will be a few and a privileged few who will have money.

“Certainly the way it is looking I don’t think there will be supporters back in the ground this season.”
