Bailey late show ensures young Magpies give Canaries the bird

- Subs:

NEWCASTLE United’s second string pulled away from the foot of the table with a late and dramatic 1-0 win over Norwich City.

The decisive moment came with a minute left and in dramatic circumstances as Academy product Owen Bailey pounced just minutes after coming on as substitute.

The game looked to be heading for a stalemate when the former North Shields Athletic junior, who came through the ranks with Sean and Matty Longstaff, pounced.

Bailey has been on the sidelines with an ACL injury for 18 months but took just three minutes to make an impact.

The youngster had made his Newcastle first-team debut in the Premier League Asia Trophy against

Wolves before disaster struck with a bad injury.

The Magpies started the day sitting at the bottom of the table in Premier League Two after a run of four games without a victory.

Tom Allan had an early effort saved by Norwich stopper Joe Rose with just seven minutes gone.

The Canaries had the better opportunities in the opening 45 minutes with both Josh Giurgi and

Matthew Dennis seeing shots saved by Jake Turner.

The sides went in level at the break and, after Stan Flaherty went close with a free-kick, the match looked to be heading for a draw - until the late heroics from Bailey.

Newcastle climb from bottom to third-bottom and above Sunderland and West Brom.
