Departure of young talented midfielder saddens boss Fenton

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

SOUTH Shields manager Graham Fenton has expressed his sadness over the departure of young midfielder Arron Thompson.

The 20-year-old has scored one goal in 19 appearances for the Mariners first-team and looked set for a bright future at the 1st Cloud Arena.

Thompson made his debut in an Integro League Cup tie against Morpeth Town in September 2018 and made several eye-catching appearances as he looked to establish himself in the senior setup at the club.

Thompson spent time on loan at Ebac Northern League Division One club West Auckland Town earlier this season but returned to South Shields when the campaign was curtailed by the Football Association. Thompson will leave the Mariners after a mutual agreement was made over the termination of his contract.

Despite his departure, Fenton believes that the youngster will be an asset for his next club.

He told the club website: “It’s really sad that it has come to an end with Arron Thompson. He has been an absolute pleasure to work with and has represented the club unbelievably well during his time with the Academy and the first-team.

“I’m sure he will go on to do well because of his attitude, application and ability. Unfortunately, he won’t be continuing on the journey with us at this time but you never know what might happen in the future.

“He is a diamond of a person and whichever club he goes to will have a really good player on their hands.”
