RYANAIR has launched a brand new route from Newcastle to Greece in time for the summer holidays.

The budget airline has announced a service between the North East and Chania, in Crete, starting in July.

The new route will form part of Ryanair’s summer schedule with flights operating twice a week.

To mark the occasion the airline has launched a sale which includes fares from £19.99 each way this summer on ryanair.com, although you’ll need to book by midnight on March 28.

Ryanair says families can book their summer getaway with the peace of mind that they can change their flights free of charge should Covid19 restrictions stop them from travelling.

Currently national lockdowns in the UK include a ban on travelling abroad for holidays, with new laws coming into force Monday which could see rule-breakers face £5,000 fines.

Boris Johnson said that as part of England’s lockdown roadmap foreign travel could resume from May 17 at the earliest, subject to a review by the government’s Global Travel Taskforce which is expected to share an update in April.

Ryanair’s commercial director, Jason McGuinness, said: “We are pleased to announce a new Newcastle to Chania route, commencing in July 2021 and flying twice weekly as part of our UK Summer 2021 schedule.

“Mindful that Covid restrictions change regularly, customers can now book flights for a welldeserved break knowing that if they need to postpone or change their travel dates, they can do so up to two times with a zero change fee until the end of October 2021.

“To celebrate this new Chania route, we are launching a seat sale with fares available from just £19.99 for travel until the end of October 2021, which must be booked by midnight Sunday, 28 th March 2021. Since these amazing low fares will be snapped up quickly, customers should log onto www.ryanair.com to avoid missing out.”

Leon McQuaid, head of aviation at Newcastle International Airport said: “We are delighted that Ryanair have added this twice weekly service to Chania, Crete from July.

“This is excellent news for those in the North East considering a getaway this summer when travel restrictions are eased.

“Despite the pandemic and the impact it is having on the aviation industry, this eighth destination from Ryanair shows that Newcastle International Airport is going from strength to strength and we look forward to welcoming customers from across the region to travel to these popular destinations.”

It comes after Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary revealed passengers will be asked to wear face masks on flights potentially until 2022.

“I would imagine at this point in time, we’re planning to continue to require mandatory face mask wearing on board our aircraft through the remainder of this summer schedule and next winter’s schedule,” he said.
