FITNESS fanatics were jumping, running and lifting for joy yesterday as gyms were finally allowed to re-open.

Salons, non-essential shops and beer gardens were also able to re-open as part of the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown.

And some people were up bright and early to enjoy their first workout indoors after three months of outdoor exercise in unpredictable weather.

Rachel Richards, 30, felt a mix of nervousness and excitement as she stepped back into the gym at 8.30 yesterday morning.

She said: “I felt a bit nervous because it had been a while, but I’m buzzing to be back in the gym.

“I started training outside for the first time during lockdown and I enjoyed it, but there’s something so good about getting back in the gym.”

The mum-of-three, who started training at James Garrity Fitness before her wedding three years ago, added: “It’s great to be able to use all the equipment again. I’ve really missed the weights.”

James Garrity opened his gym on Gateshead Quays at 7am after relocating from Byker.

And he arrived at work at 5.45am, feeling full of excitement for the day ahead. James said: “I didn’t sleep much last night – I was in and out of sleep thinking about it and when I turned the key to the gym this morning, it finally started to sink in.

“It felt like I was going to go downstairs and Santa was there and the presents were delivered, it’s so exciting.”

He added: “I think the milkman was here after me this morning, I was eager to get those lights on and get going and it feels amazing.

“I’m friends with quite a lot of gym owners in Newcastle and we’ve all been messaging each other for support.”

Personal trainer Alisha Cowie was also excited for gyms to re-open and even came into work on her day off.

She said: “I didn’t even have clients this morning but I just wanted to come in and see everyone and train myself because I’ve been so excited to be back.

“Last night I had butterflies. There was nerves and excitement knowing that I was coming back to the gym, because it’s been a long time and things are different, but overall there’s just the excitement of finally getting back.”

Rachel Harle, 21, booked her first session back at the gym at 8.30am this morning and said she was “buzzing” to return.

She said: “I’m so happy to be back in a gym. I’ve been training outside during lockdown but it’s just not the same.

“There’s something about being in a gym and having the music on that creates such a good atmosphere.”
