Fans ‘will get behind new boss’

-

FORMER Newcastle United forward Micky Quinn believes the club’s supporters will be fully behind new boss Eddie Howe.

All be it from a hotel room due to his positive Covid-19 test, Howe took charge of his first game as Magpies boss as they were held to a 3-3 draw by Brentford.

Newcastle were forced to show their character as after taking an early lead through Jamaal Lascelles, being then forced to come from behind twice to earn a point thanks to Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin goals.

Despite the positives of yesterday, though, Newcastle remain winless from their opening 12 matches and sit bottom of the Premier League.

Quinn remains confident, however, his former side can stay in the division amid the positivity Howe has brought both on and off the field since his arrival.

He said: “Definitely. I saw all the positives, there was intensity going forward and scoring three goals.

“They just have to keep clean sheets and Eddie has not been there long so with his staff he can get on the training ground and improve that defence.

“The fans will get behind any manager to start with and Eddie has said all the right things about the city, the club itself, the history, the fans.

“He respects and gets that and I think that is what they like and what they want.

“They want to see a coach who comes into their club and respects what they are all about.

“They will be behind him 100% to make sure it works and with that I think Eddie is feeling it because he has said all the right positive things.

“I think they can only move forward with him in charge and get points under their belt because at the moment they are rock bottom of the league.”
