United improving but we can’t fix things overnight, Tindall says

- By LEE RYDER

STAND-IN boss Jason Tindall admits it will take time to fix things at struggling Newcastle United.

However, the Magpies’ assistant coach added he, Covid-hit boss Eddie Howe and the rest of the coaching staff were encouraged by Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Brentford.

United have failed to win any of their 12 Premier League games this season and are now bottom of the table.

Saturday’s match was meant to be Howe’s first in charge, only for him to miss the game as he had to selfisolate - leaving Tindall and Graeme Jones to lead the team instead.

After taking the lead and then going behind twice in a rollercoaster match, United fought back to claim a point and almost won it late on.

Tindall said: “We know we have goals in the team but we know we have to be better defensively.

“We were not going to be able to fix everything in a short space of time.

“Was there an improvement in performance? I think so, yes.”

United’s attacking stats were their best of the season, firing 23 shots and netting three for the first time.

Former Bournemouth head coach Tindall added: “We set out to win the game but after going behind twice not to lose the game was important. We had Joey’s (Joelinton) chance right at the end and on another day that might have gone in.

“It was a really positive performance from the guys, we asked them to play with a lot more intensity.

“You can see a lot of the work we have been doing on the training ground come out and we looked more of an attacking threat I felt. It was a big step forward for us.”
