Former inmates at Medomsley Detention Centre appeal for proof of detention

MCKEAG & CO SOLICITORS IS APPEALING FOR STATEMENTS CONFIRMING THESE WERE PREVIOUS INMATES OF THE DETENTION CENTRE

- Medomsley Detention Centre

A settlement scheme has been negotiated on behalf of the former inmates of Medomsley Detention Centre, the former youth facility near Consett in County Durham. However, there are still some cases where the Ministry of Justice are refusing to pay compensation to inmates with no proof of their detention.

McKeag & Co Solicitors are appealing to anyone with any information or memories of these inmates to come forward and give a statement to help their clients’ cases.

Where the claimant has no proof of their detention - usually when they have been convicted for non-payment of fines - the former inmates’ conviction records do not show that they spent time at Medomsley.

McKeag & Co said: “We have a number of clients in this unfortunate position whose criminal record does not make any reference to being detained at Medomsley.”

“In order to try and provide corroboration of their detention, our clients have agreed to allow us to present information concerning themselves and their time in Medomsley through social media and via an article in the Chronicle, in the hope that other inmates who were detained at the same time and have proof of their detention might contact us and will be prepared to provide a short statement confirming that they have memories of our clients when they were in Medomsley.”

Any such statements will be confidential and would only be used and disclosed to the Ministry of Justice to support the compensation claims. The clients concerned are:

• Alan Aspin from Ashington

• Andrew Office, otherwise known

as Andy, from Meadowell

• Michael Bush, otherwise known as Michael Douglass/Bushy,

from Sunderland

• Nigel William Gaffney, otherwise known as Booboo, from Newbiggin

by the Sea

• Stephen Joseph Allen, otherwise

known as Evo, from Throckley

• Steven Hilton from Ferryhill

• Thomas Smith from Kings Cross, Halifax

If you can provide a statement on any of these former inmates, please contact McKeag & Co by heading to https://www.mckeagandco.com/, calling 0191 213 1010 or by emailing enquiries@mckeagandco.com.
