WINDS of over 40mph are set to hit the North East tomorrow, the Met Office says as it issues a yellow weather warning covering the entire country.

People living throughout the North East, the rest of England and Wales, and parts of eastern Scotland can expect “strong winds”, “potential travel disruption” and possible power cuts tomorrow, the Met Office’s yellow warning says.

The incoming storm has been named Storm Barra by meteorologists.

Coastal areas in County Durham, South Tyneside, North Tyneside and Northumberland can expect some of the strongest winds, including gusts of over 40mph and heavy rain in Seaham, Sunderland, Tynemouth, Blyth, Amble and Berwick.

Newcastle is also set to be hit by gusts of more than 40mph on tomorrow afternoon, along with heavy rain later into the evening.

Those living in high-altitude areas should also brace themselves, with gusts set to top 40mph in Consett, County Durham and Bellingham, Northumberland.

There is also a snow warning affecting western parts of County Durham and Northumberland, around Stanhope, Allendale, Alston and the area of the A68 approaching the Scottish border.

The entire region can expect transport delays, while further power cuts are “possible,” the Met Office warns, and coastal areas are likely to be battered by spray and large waves.

To prepare for the gales, the Met Office advises securing loose objects like ladders and garden furniture, securely fastening doors and windows, and securing loft trapdoors with bolts. Gale winds, the meteorologists say, are the number one cause of property damage in the UK.
