More fan-tastic home gates on Heed wish list

- By JEFF BOWRON

GATESHEAD have appealed for fans that got behind the team on Friday against Charlton in the FA Cup to back the Heed in their bid for promotion back to the National League.

Mike Williamson’s men are well placed in National League North and take on York City at the International Stadium tomorrow night.

It’s another important game for Gateshead with the Minstermen likely to bring several hundred fans to Tyneside.

A crowd of 3,746 saw Gateshead put in a fine display against the Addicks in front of the TV cameras.

The Heed can now focus solely on the league after their lucrative cup run came to an end against League One opposition.

York are attractive opposition, and a good gate is also expected for the Boxing Day derby at home to struggling neighbours Blyth Spartans.

The Gateshead board is keen to add to the hardcore 800 they already have, with recent crowds for both league and cup games topping four figures.

Friday’s match was the first on home soil that Gateshead have failed to win this season.

Williamson was also delighted with the backing his side got and hopes the Heed’s exploits will attract more people to the International Stadium.

He said: “It was brilliant to see the turn out on Friday. Hopefully they’ll come back because the performance was good.

“We came up short, but the fashion in the way we played and the chances we created, we were very disappointed not to get anything from the game on what was a great occasion.

“The York game is another massive one for us and, hopefully there’ll be another good crowd.”
