Howe already focusing on Foxes fixture

- By LEE RYDER

EDDIE Howe wants his Newcastle players to enjoy the spoils of victory but insists thoughts must now turn to next Sunday’s trip to Leicester City.

A much-needed 1-0 win over relegation rivals Burnley at St James’ Park on Saturday lifted the previously winless Magpies off the foot of the Premier League.

After a brutal start which saw them take just seven points from their first 14 league games, fans, players and coaches were euphoric on Saturday at the full-time whistle.

Asked if he would allow himself to celebrate the win over the Clarets, Howe said: “I will allow myself tonight to be pleased and content with today and the preparations, the week’s work has been good.

“I will also allow the players that luxury. I want the players to enjoy winning – you have to have that feeling.

“And I want them to enjoy this moment and then be prepared to work and fight very soon.

“I am delighted for everybody connected with the club.”

United face Brendan Rodgers’ side next as they look to make it three games without defeat.

After finally breaking their duck, Howe wants Newcastle to carry plenty of positives into a new week.

The Magpies left the field to a standing ovation against Sean Dyche’s men following a gritty, hard-fought victory.

Howe said: “The relationship that we have quickly built with the supporters has been a really special one. They were absolutely magnificent.

“For the players, I can’t thank them enough and I think it is an amazing feeling to get that first win as a big thank you for everything they have given me and the team in the last few weeks.

“We knew how desperate they were for that first victory.

“It is an amazing feeling and the reaction at the end can only galvanise us to hopefully move forward.”

As well as Leicester, United face a trip to Liverpool and a home encounter against Manchester City before Christmas.

Howe said: “I try not to look at groups of fixtures.

“It’s a waste of energy, and a waste of time, because you’ve got to play them one at a time – and we’re going to look at the first one.

“The minute you start looking at groups, it’s a dangerous thing to do.

“We’ll be really boosted by the win, that should give us a lot of confidence, and hopefully some positive momentum to take into a tough away fixture.”
