EDDIE Howe has made a tactical promise to Newcastle United fans going into 2022.

With the calendar year ending early because of the postponement of the clash with Everton, the action gets under way for another year at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

In Newcastle’s last game the Magpies pressed for long periods and while they were second best in the possession stats, they created a host of chances against Manchester United before taking a 1-1 draw.

Looking ahead, Howe said: “We want to be aggressive, we want to be an intense

team. We want supporters to come to the game knowing we are endeavouring to win the game.

“That is how I believe the game should be played rather than sitting back and accepting our fate.

“There have been question on marks over the team but I thought ht as a unit everybody is contribututing to that.

“We were a real threat with the ball as well.

“That’s the most creative we have been since I’ve been here, how De Gea saved Almiron’s shot I don’t know, we hit the post and Maxi had a chance e at the beginning of the sececond half too.

“The second goal oal was always al going to be key for us [versus Man M United]).”

Newcastle will be desperate to get the th new year off to a positive start on the th South Coast before the hectic fixture fix list continues with games at home h to Cambridge United in the FA Cup and then a crucial clash against ag Watford.

Former Bournemouth boss Howe added: “We know the games only get harder – they don’t get easier – but I’m very boosted by what we’ve seen from the players.”
