POPULAR Northumberland pub The Diamond has closed its doors for a major refurbishment after hospitality group Vaulkhard Leisure took on the lease permanently.

Vaulkhard – which owns the likes of Bar Luga, Blakes coffee house and Castro’s and last year took over a number pubs including the Town Wall and the Bridge Tavern – has added to its portfolio by taking on the lease of The Diamond in Ponteland after becoming temporary managers of the pub in 2018.

Director Ollie Vaulkhard has held ambitions to make changes to the pub since taking it on, keen to make the most of its position in the village while also keeping regulars happy.

The Diamond has now closed its doors ahead of a £350,000 revamp by Vaulkhard and building owners Heinekenowned Star Pubs & Bars.

The much-loved pub will reopen in March in time for Mother’s Day and the end of the Six Nations rugby.

Known for its riverside location, the refurbishment will create an al fresco terrace where guests can socialise for the majority of the year.

Funds are also being spent on a covered timber pergola.

Inside, the decor and furniture will be upgraded.

Mr Vaulkhard said: “We know there is a real demand in the North East for al fresco drinking and dining, especially since the pandemic started.

“We put up a temporary structure to gauge its appeal.

“It was very popular but sadly blew away during storm Arwen. Our new al fresco area will be more substantial, more comfortable and atmospheric.

“Inside, it’s a case of bringing The Diamond up to date.

“We’re keen to retain the pub’s classic feel and stay true to its roots.

“Pubs in the ’90s, however, were different to today. The Diamond needed to evolve to reflect changing society and broaden its appeal as a result there will be more craft going forward and a wider selection of premium drinks.”

The pub has 12 en suite wi-fi fitted letting rooms and a function room.

Jeremy Scott, investment manager at Star Pubs & Bars said: “We’re delighted that Vaulkhard Leisure has taken on the lease of The Diamond.

“They have years of experience and a great reputation for running quality pubs, bars and cafes in the North East.

“The upgrade will improve the comfort for customers and bring the pub up to date.

“By the time The Diamond reopens hopefully the airport will be operating to capacity, making it an ideal location for a stopover as well as great place to socialise for the many local customers who use it on a regular basis.
