Nash’s pride after Robins win third penalty shootout

-

NORTH Shields manager Marc Nash lauded the confidence of his players after they came through a penalty shootout at Harborough Town to move into the last 16.

In a topsy-turvy affair in Leicestershire, Josh Walsh opened the scoring for the hosts with a powerful drive on 28 minutes.

But Robins top goalscorer Dan Wilson swiftly produced a fine turn and finish to level the tie.

Both sides had spurned chances in normal time – but Nash’s men would have to come through a third penalty shootout of their Vase run to secure a place in today’s draw

With both sides having scored their first four spot-kicks, young Shields goalkeeper Ollie Marshall kept out Rhys Hoenes’ effort before veteran midfielder Gary Ormston fired in the winner.

Nash said: “That’s three shootouts and two last-minute winners in six ties for us.

“It was a really tough game against a big, powerful side and it was what we expected. I think they were struggling in the last 10 minutes and we created chances.

“We have got through some very close games and the manner of it makes you think that it could be a route to go through.

“Penalties, the more you do them, in front of bigger crowds, the more you become accustomed to it.

“I sensed an air of confidence about the players and we always fancy Ollie to save one - he did that and we are delighted to get through.”

North Shields are the Northern League’s last-man standing after Division One rivals Consett fell to a home defeat against North West Counties League side Wythenshawe Town.

All looked to be going to plan for the Steelmen when a stunning strike from Jake Orrell put them ahead inside the opening three minutes.

But the turning point came six minutes into the second half when Consett midfielder Matty Slocombe was shown a straight red card for an elbow.

The visitors took full advantage with a quickfire equaliser from Ionut-Casian Anghel and a late winner from Darius Palma.
