Toon should never be in this position, says Saint-Maximin

-

ALLAN Saint-Maximin has admitted that Newcastle’s players owe it to supporters to get out of trouble, saying the Magpies should ‘never be in this position’.

The Magpies would have moved out of the drop zone for the first time since September with a win against relegation rivals Watford.

Saint-Maximin had Newcastle on course to do just that after the Frenchman fired the hosts in front with a superb individual goal just after half-time.

However, United dropped off after taking the lead, allowing Watford back into the game, and Joao Pedro duly popped up with an equaliser in the 87th minute to silence St James’ Park.

No other side in the Premier League have dropped more points from winning positions (21) than Newcastle this season and the Magpies have to get something at Leeds next weekend if they are to give themselves a shot at survival.

“The most important thing at the moment is the club and the club never have to be in this position,” Saint-Maximin said.

“We can see the atmosphere in the stadium. We don’t need to be in this position and for the fans and for the history of the club, this cannot happen.

“I try to do my best to give the win to my team, but it’s always the same story and it’s not enough so I have to think about myself to maybe try to score more goals because, at the moment, even when I score one, it’s not enough so I’m so disappointed.”

Newcastle remain in 19th place - two points from safety - and Eddie Howe’s side will be cut further adrift if Watford get a result at Burnley tomorrow.

However, even if the Hornets fail to win, basement boys Burnley will send Newcastle bottom if the Clarets get at least a point in the first of their three games in hand.
