Warning over new roadworks

DRIVERS ARE URGED TO ALLOW MORE TIME FOR ROUNDABOUT

- By SONIA SHARMA Reporter sonia.sharma@reachplc.com

DRIVERS are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys ahead of work starting on a new cycling roundabout.

The new junction, which will be segregated for cyclists and pedestrians, will be created at the Rake Lane and Billy Mill Lane junction in North Tyneside.

The roundabout, which will be the first of its kind in the North East, is along a busy route that leads to North Tyneside General Hospital.

Drivers also use the junction to travel to other areas such as the A1058 Coast Road, the Cobalt Business Park and Whitley Bay.

North Tyneside Council says: “The construction team will work with consideration for the public, including residents and road users. However, please allow extra time for your journey as there may be delays.”

The work is due to start this week and will finish by the summer.

The speed limit will be reduced to 30mph on the New York Bypass and Rake Lane, while the Rake Lane/Billy Mill Lane roundabout and its arms will be reduced to 20mph. This will help protect both the public and workforce.

Following the scheme’s completion, the 30mph speed limit will remain in place on Rake Lane, while the New York Bypass will be returned to a reduced speed of 40mph to make it safer for all road users.

Most work will be carried out between 7.30am and 5pm (the team does not anticipate any weekend working).

More information will be provided ahead of the works towards the end of the scheme.

The Rake Lane/Billy Mill Lane roundabout and its arms will be reduced to one lane at all times, using traffic cones, as per the layout of the completed scheme.

To receive regular updates about the project and advance notice of any work that may affect journeys, people can sign up to an electronic bulletin service by emailing sustainabletravel@northtyneside.gov.uk and putting “Rake Lane” in the subject field.
