Magpies skipper Miley eyeing derby victory next
NEWCASTLE United Under-18s captain Jamie Miley set his sights on a derby win against Sunderland after his side secured their passage into the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup.
The young Magpies held off a spirited comeback from their Colchester United counterparts to claim a 3-2 win in an entertaining fourth-round tie at St James’ Park on Monday night.
Peter Ramage’s side took a narrow lead into half-time thanks to an own-goal but looked well on their way to a comfortable win as Callum McNally and Michael Ndiweni gave them a three-goal advantage as the final 15 minutes arrived.
U’s striker Samson Tovide gave the visitors some hope when he beat Max Thompson and substitute T’aizo MarcelDilaver set United nerves jangling when he netted in the third of 11 additional minutes.
Despite being disrupted by a number of injuries, the young Magpies held on the claim a hard-earned win and set up a trip to
Blackpool in the next round. A league visit to Sunderland is next up for Miley and his team-mates – and the United midfielder revealed he is already focusing on the visit to Wearside after enjoying a memorable night at Gallowgate.
He told the Chronicle: “It’s absolutely unbelievable.
“It’s something you dream of as a kid, and for it to come true, and to captain the lads, is unbelievable. “It was an excellent win from the lads and it’s something that we aspired towards at the start of the season. “It’s going very well, we are playing very well at the top end of the pitch, we just need to tighten up on the late goals and stop that bit of worry at the end.
“The lads did it, that’s what the group is very good at, all sticking together and getting through.
“All of the lads are looking forward to it [Blackpool in the next round], but we start in the league at Sunderland away on Saturday and hopefully getting the win there.”
