Dub keeping faith after a vital victory

-

NEWCASTLE goalkeeper Martin Dubravka says the victory over Leeds United can act as the confidence booster the squad needed.

Newcastle United travelled to Elland Road with few expecting a win, especially after the side had ignominiously lost to Cambridge United in the FA Cup and then failed to retain a lead over Watford.

However, there was a far greater attacking impetus from the Magpies, even after they took the lead, with the habit of sitting back being one boss Eddie Howe is trying to eradicate.

Speaking after the match, Dubravka said: “We really needed this win to lift our confidence.

“I think I we deserved it because the work ethic we showed on the pitch today was great.

“We created good chances and I am happy we scored a goal to win us the game.

“You need to have that little bit of luck sometimes but I think we deserved it because we worked so hard in the build-up to the game and then made it count. That is the most important thing.

“It is a massive three points and it is crucial now that we stick together.

“We go game by game because this is the Premier League and you always have to be focused on the next game.

“It is good we have a few weeks off now because a few of the players picked up some injuries.

“Hopefully, they will have enough time to recover.”

The 33-year-old, who put in a great performance in Yorkshire, also reflected on the 1-1 draw with Watford, when Newcastle failed to hang on to the lead.

He added: “I don’t know if we were afraid or scared because we were leading and it was disappointing not to win.”
