Andrew McKinney, security Training Instructor at Newcastle International explains how he progressed through the ranks, starting as a seasonal security Officer.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT NEWCASTLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT? AND, WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST ROLE?
I’ve been with the company for 6 years now, I originally joined seasonal security Officer, as the season came to a close I was then offered a Full Time employment at the airport.
COULD YOU TELL US HOW YOU ENDED UP IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE?
For many years my goal was to become a security supervisor. I was supported by the business to take on more responsibility and to widen my skill set and when the rare job vacancy came up to work in the security training and compliance team I jumped at the opportunity and applied. After completing each stage of the interview process I was offered the position of security Training Instructor which I was delighted about!
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO ACHIEVE SO MUCH IN YOUR CAREER AT THE AIRPORT?
It feels amazing, from my very first seasonal interview when I joined the company I mentioned my goal was to have a career and not just a job. The airport has always supported and help me increase my skills, knowledge and experience through training and mentoring.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT WORKING AT THE AIRPORT?
It truly is different every day, from the people I work with and meet, to the problems and challenges you encounter on the way, it’s what keeps the job interesting!
