Cats will do OK - but have Scot to keep hold of Stew, says Saha

LOUIS FEARS AN IN-FORM ROSS MAY B E TEM PTED BY A MOVE TO RANGERS

-

FORMER Sunderland striker Louis Saha believes the Black Cats will have enough in their ranks to survive in the Championship next season - but fears Rangers’ interest in Ross Stewart may see the Scot leave the Stadium of Light.

Last year’s top goalscorer has one year left on his contract on Wearside but his fine form in the last campaign has seen him attract a numbe r of suitors.

Last month, sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said the two parties would enter negotiations over a new deal during this summer but as of yet there has been no confirmation of an agreement.

Rangers , Middlesbrough and Sheffield United are among those interested in Stewart’s signature, - with all three having lofty ambitions.

Recent Scotland debutant Stewart will play a huge part in Sunderland’s attempts to return to the Premier League – or avoid demotion back to the third tier – and Saha believes if the Black Cats survive with ease in the Championship they will be able to keep hold of their star man. The former Manchester United and Fulham striker (pictured left) said: “Sunderland can stay in the Championship. “They are a massive club who really shouldn’t be in that division.

“It’s amazing that they have come back from such a difficult situation which they were in.

“They need to aim to get back in the Premier League as soon as possible because they have a huge stadium full of amazing fans who cannot wait to see the derby game against Newcastle again!

“Ross Stewart is on fire and he knows he is an attractive player for a club like Rangers.

“I think he could be swayed by a move there.

“I think that staying in the Championship is the best thing because you will then have that base to show you can make the step up.

“I also think that when you want to improve as a player having stab i l ity at one club is best.

“I would suggest that Ross stays at Sunderland next season and waits for a move.”
