Midfielder makes it six for Mariners

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

SOUTH Shields have made former Watford and Colchester United midfielder Josh Doherty their sixth signing of a busy summer.

Mariners manager Kevin Phillips has already enjoyed a productive summer in the transfer market with the likes of Mackenzie Heaney, Michael Woods and Gary Liddle all joining the Northern Premier League Premier Division club.

Doherty will also form part of the Mariners squad next season after putting pen-to-paper following his departure from Northern Irish Premier League club Portadown.

Starting out with Watford, Doherty also went on to spend time with Leyton Orient, Altrincham, Crawley Town, Colchester United and Barnet during his time in England.

He also had a spell with Ards in his native Northern Ireland and represented his country up to Under-21 level.

The 26-year-old has been described as ‘an important addition’ by Mariners manager Phillips as he continues to put his own stamp on his squad ahead of the new season.

He said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Josh has decided to join us. He is very excited about the project we’ve presented to him for not just this season, but the years ahead, and it’s brilliant to have him as part of the squad.

“Josh brings great attributes to the squad. He has an unbelievable left foot, brings good energy and has a fantastic delivery. He has a terrific attitude and can also play in various positions.”

Dunston UTS have also added to their squad after striker Sado Deal agreed to return to the Northern Premier League East Division club.

The Guinea-Bissau-born frontman scored six goals in 10 appearances for Chris Swailes’ side last season before departing for National League North side Blyth Spartans in November.

Djalo returned to Dunston on a one-month loan after he was unable to break into the Spartans line-up on a regular basis, but that move has now become a permanent one following his release from Croft Park.

After completing his return, Djalo told the club website: “It is with great pride that I accept the wonderful challenge again offered by Dunston UTS, a great club with great ambitions. I’d like to thank the trust put in me by the club, management and fans.”
