Standing by Ukraine
ST CHARLES’ PUPILS were heartbroken to hear about the devastating news of people suffering in Ukraine. Unfortunately, innocent civilians have been forced to evacuate from their homes and, as a caring school community, the students of St Charles have collectively contributed toiletries, food, clothes and other necessities.
Mrs Hague stated, “We fundraised large collections of toiletries, food and clothes. On Friday 25 March we did a march against hunger and used the student’s generous donations to support those in need in Ukraine.”
Two Year 6 pupils felt great sympathy for the people whose homes have been destroyed and made a cake sale to gather further kind contributions. “I find it sad that we are being affected by price rises when others are suffering from poverty and grief.” A fellow Year 6 pupil believes that our school holds the power to instigate change through parliamentary pressure. He said, “We need to inform Boris Johnson and other powerful members of parliament that we must do more to help provide supplies to Ukraine.”
Mrs Binney, Deputy Headteacher and organiser of our school charity collection, explained, “I sent out information to parents to help collect donations and raise awareness for Ukraine. As a school community we really pulled together and raised a fantastic amount. No matter how big or small the donation was, every little helped.”
As a Catholic school, we will continue to try our best to help those in need and currently the people in need are those suffering, through no fault of their own, in Ukraine. As a school, students collectively practise compassion, generosity and empathy to one another and, when presented with the opportunity, St Charles’ pupils were successfully united and gave back to the wider community.
