Flexible Joelinton is boost for Howe

JOELINTON’S ability to play as either a winger or a centre-forward has proved a source of comfort for Eddie Howe this summer.

Howe has endured frustration as deals for Hugo Ekitike and Moussa Diaby did not materialise but the former AFC Bournemouth boss knows that, despite the lack of offensive arrivals, he still has options at his disposal.

Joelinton played effectively as a striker in the 3-0 win at Norwich last term. while Allan Saint-Maximin is also capable to switch to the middle if needed.

Howe is delighted with Joelinton’s fitness after two strong performances from the ex-Hoffenheim man over in Austria. The South American looks set to be one of the first names on the team sheet regardless of where he plays.

Howe told The Chronicl: “Joe has come back in a good position, technically and tactically he is very good.

“For me, it is just a case of getting him up to speed and Premier League ready. Hopefully he has another big season ahead of him again.” Newcastle’s trip to Austria was a success on the training field but ideally Howe wanted a new player through the door. Nevertheless, he refuses to get downbeat about the situation.

Howe added: “We do have players who have played in that position before. We have the two strikers (Wood and Wilson), Maxi has played there many times and Joelinton was signed as a forward as you say.

“So within the squad there are versatile players and this season – more than any – that is going to be more important than ever.”

Newcastle fans will have a clearer hint on who might start the Premier League campaign this week as Howe looks to get 90 minutes into the legs of some players. He rotated his squad in the two matches in Austria last week but will look to step things up in Portugal.

He said: “We have two really good games and we will look to build the minutes of the players. They are getting close, they should complete 90 minutes in Portugal.

“That is a big step once you get 90 minutes under your belt you are in a good place and you are ready for that first game.”
