TV PICKS OF THE WEEK
SUPERMAN & LOIS Tonight, BBC1, 5pm
The superhero spin-off continues with another exciting double bill.
It begins as Clark continues to be dogged by visions. He’s confronted by a mysterious figure – who flees after both he and Superman share another mirage. Later, we see the adversary in the Arctic, where he’s revealed to be a scarred version of Clark, with a mirrored image of Superman’s crest on his chest.
Also, Jonathan’s girlfriend looks set to lead him astray, Lois is threatened by Ally, and Dean promises to keep quiet about the Cushing family’s business affairs.
MURDER IN PROVENCE Tomorrow, ITV, 8pm
The crime drama continues, and Marine (Nancy Carroll) is now working as a consultant for the police – which means she can help Antoine and Helene (Keala Settle) as they deal with their latest case.
The trio looks into death of an aristocrat, whose body was discovered in his crumbling chateau.
Between them, they identify the
prime suspects and it seems as if the case is going to be wrapped up pretty quickly – until a another body is found.
HELP! WE BOUGHT A VILLAGE Monday, Channel 4, 4pm
This new series is an early teatime treasure. Cameras follow the plucky Brits who decide to snap up an array of properties, remote villages, hamlets, borgos and cortijos, that are lying unloved across Europe, and aim to breathe new
life into these lovely, historic houses. It begins with Paul and Yip, landscape gardeners from Kent, as they explore their bargain purchase: an abandoned settlement in Normandy. Meanwhile, Yorkshire couple Francesca and Carl set about completing the purchase of their hilltop Italian hamlet, and a restored medieval walled village in France struggles for survival.
MOUNTAIN VETS Tuesday, BBC2, 8pm
This blend of All Creatures... meets Ballykissangel following the work of
mountain vets at the Kingdom of Mourne has been compelling viewing since it first launched in 2019.
We’ve reached the halfway point in series three and there’s tension in the air as Alanna and Lorna need to operate on a three-legged lurcher, only to make a worrying discovery.
Meanwhile, Martin pulls out all the stops to save twin lambs.
THE GREAT Wednesday, Channel 4, 10pm
One of TV’s most outrageous period dramas, The Great, is back for a second series. For newcomers, the series is loosely based on the life of Catherine the Great of Russia (Elle
Fanning), who came to power by overthrowing her husband, Peter III (Nicholas Hoult).
The action picks up four months after the coup began, as Catherine’s forces are in one wing of the palace, with Peter in another.
Is there anything that can end the stalemate?
COMMONWEALTH GAMES: OPENING CEREMONY
Thursday, BBC1, 7pm
Over the next 11 days, hundreds of athletes will be competing in 280 events across 20 different sports at 15 venues, as the XXII Commonwealth Games takes place
in Birmingham and the West Midlands.
Clare Balding is on hand to present coverage of the curtain raiser in front of 35,000 people at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.
The creative team behind the ceremony includes Peaky Blinders’
writer and creator Steven Knight, so the show, which is expected to showcase West Midlands talent and diversity, should be something special.
JANE AUSTEN’S SANDITON Friday, ITV, 9pm
What the author would think of this period drama is anybody’s guess.
Yet, whatever the answer, the series is continuing to thrill audiences. Here, the enigmatic Alexander Colbourne proves rather distracting on Charlotte’s first day at work, Alison hopes for a reunion with her saviour, and a horrid surprise awaits Lady Denham.
