£33m price tag placed on Blues’ Werner
GERMANY international Timo Werner has been touted to a number of European clubs, including Newcastle, but financial constraints could hinder any deal.
Chelsea want £33million for the rapid forward, who has been linked with Juventus and his former club RB Leipzig.
The 26-year-old has only been a bit-part player since arriving at Stamford Bridge and has been pushed further down the pecking order by Raheem Sterling joining from Manchester City.
Werner is open to playing ‘anywhere’ as he looks to earn a place in Hansi Flick’s Germany squad for the World Cup later this year and is prepared to move.
However, he is on a whopping £272,000 per week at Chelsea and is unlikely to find any clubs willing to match those lucrative terms. That figure is almost 2.5 times more than United’s top earner Kieran Trippier is paid (£110,000 per week).
Werner’s agents – who also represent Magpies defender Fabian Schar – have refused to comment on speculation linking him with a move to Tyneside.
Werner, who is on tour with Chelsea in the the US, was asked about his future and replied: “I could be happy anywhere. I’m happy when I play and score goals. I should take care of that and the other things will come.”
Werner now has increased competition at Chelsea after the arrival of England international Sterling.
Chelsea were walloped 4-0 by Arsenal in pre-season in the States and during the game an on-field spat between Malang Sarr and Werner resulted in the French centre-back complaining to Thomas Tuchel about the forward.
Former Stuttgart man Werner joined the Blues from Leipzig in 2020 for £53million with the likes of Liverpool also interested in signing him.
But since then, the 53-time-capped international scored just 23 goals in 89 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea.
