RAISE A GLASS

- With Jane Clare

Here we are, Easter. Whatever you’re up to this weekend, I wish you happy days.

Perhaps you’re with friends, or family, or maybe it’s just a weekend like any other.

I’ve been scouting around for supermarket wine buys when you’re doing your weekly shop.

If it’s a hearty red you’re after, how about Marques de Valido Gran Reserva Rioja.

It is reduced at the Co-op, down from £13.50 to £10.50, until April 2.

A gran reserva rioja isn’t made every year, but only when winemakers believe that the grapes are super-concentrated and perfect for long ageing.

To a much cheaper red and La P’tite Pierre Rouge, which is a new listing at Tesco (£7). It won’t knock your socks off, but it will make you feel snug in slippers. It’s an all-rounder French vin de table and comes at a price that won’t frighten you, with a flavour spectrum of red fruits and spice.

Now to Porta 6 Red Wine (RRP

£7.50, in most supermarkets) and you might guess by the name that it hails from Portugal.

I’m told sales exploded when celebrity chef James Martin said it was one of the nicest reds he had tasted. It’s a red fruit bomb made from traditional Portuguese grapes.

I love, love, love cabernet franc, and Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Argentinian Cabernet Franc is available at a reduced price, £8, until April 2. Carménère, meanwhile, is a smashing red wine alongside a roast dinner, and Asda’s Extra Special Carménère is down to £7.50.

I’ll stay in Asda with a zesty Portuguese white, Azul Marinho Alvarinho (£8.50) which is exclusive to the retailer. If fish is on your menu this Easter, it will be a happy palate partner. The grape is alvarinho – also known as albarino across the border in Spain.

It is from the Vinho Verde region in the north of the country, and these styles of wine are simply sprinkled with springtime vibes. Citrus and stone fruit drive its flavours.

And finally to Aldi, and one of its new whites on the shelves in recent days.

I really enjoyed Specially Selected Coteaux de Béziers Viognier

Grenache (£8.49) from the south of France, which is a blend of viognier and grenache blanc.

Viognier plays the shouty role and brings along soft white peach, a silky mouthfeel and a nice zing of citrus.
