DETECTIVES probing an attack at the home of notorious hardman John Henry Sayers have questioned a new suspect.

The 31-year-old man was arrested last week. He was questioned on suspicion of making threats to kill before being released under investigation.

This brings the total number of people to be arrested in connection with the incident to 16.

Dad-of-six John Henry Sayers was at home with his children when the incident happened, on Thursday, June 16.

A video circulating on Whatsapp shows two black cars pull up outside the property, on the Fossway in Byker, Newcastle, before at least four men jump out carrying what appear to be baseball bats. They smash windows at Sayers’ home and attack cars outside, while shouting and swearing.

Other footage shows a vehicle being driven directly at Sayers, who escapes serious injury by jumping out of the way on to a parked car. Sayers did not call police himself, but it is understood officers were quickly on the scene.

A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder soon after.

Police then made a further 14 arrests in the following days. Eight men were

held on suspicion of attempted murder, while another six suspects, all male, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. And a 24-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. All the suspects have been released under investigation.

Det Chief Insp Sharon Chatterton, of Northumbria Police, said: “At this stage, we believe those involved in the disturbance are known to each other and we do not believe there to be any wider risk to the public.”

After the incident, John Henry and his brothers Stephen and Michael stood outside the damaged home to take a picture. Stephen posted it on Facebook with the caption ‘Three Brothers.’

The Chronicle has also seen a statement signed by John Henry saying he would not be supporting any police investigation or prosecution arising from the incident.
