Aussie Bailey gets Wright good deal

STOPPER PLEDGES FUTURE TO BLACK CATS AFTER TALKS

- By CHARLIE BENNETT

SUNDERLAND have announced Bailey Wright will remain at the club after signing a two-year contract extension.

The Australian international was a stalwart last season – making 37 league appearances as the Black Cats returned to the Championship.

Concerns over his future were due to his contract expiring at the end of this month.

However, the 29-yearold has penned an extension as Sunderland aim to cement their status in the second tier.

Wright started the play-off final victory against Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley and follows goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, who signed improved terms last week.

After securing his future, the defender said: “I’m absolutely delighted to sign a new contract at Sunderland. What a way to finish last season at Wembley Stadium and I’m looking forward to enjoying Championship football this campaign.

“I can’t wait to get started following my return to training, and to see all of our supporters back at the Stadium of Light next month for the opening game of the season.”

Alex Neil also commented after persuading the player to remain at the Stadium of Light. He said: “Going from League One to the Championship is a big step, but we wanted to keep that core together and retain our key performers from last season. “We know the leadership qualities that Bailey has, and he has played in the Championship before so he adds experience, but his influence on other players can’t be underestimated. “Although sometimes you can only see that off the pitch, I’ve been in and around it enough to recognise that and we are delighted to get this deal across the line.”
