OWNERS of a Newcastle bar are celebrating the “fantastic” news that it has won a North East Pub of the Year title.

The Three Mile at Gosforth, which was part of a major revamp of the site by the Malhotra Group ahead of the pandemic, has been named a winner in the National Pub and Bar Awards.

The venue previously had been singled out as county winner for Tyne and Wear before going on to the national finals where it beat rivals in Northumberland and Durham.

The pub’s success follows that of its sister bar Leila Lily’s in Newcastle’s Grey Street which won the same overall title at the awards in 2021. The Malhotra Group plc, which runs several leisure venues in the region, has invested more than £7.5m in the historic Three Mile site since taking it over, creating a purposebuilt 64-bedroom Great North Hotel and refurbishing the existing premises.

The results of the transformation were revealed upon its reopening in 2020. As part of the revamp, a new restaurant and coffee shop were also added to the site along with an extended terrace with outdoor heating and TVS.

Celebrating news of the award, the group’s operations director Vaz Malhotra

said: “This is a fantastic award for us to win, particularly when it’s one that is chosen by our industry.

“We know we were up against some very tough competition from across the North East so it’s really gratifying that the judges have recognised the hard work everyone has put in to make the Three Mile such a success.”

And he praised both regulars and staff for paving the way to that success, saying: “We have fantastic customers and a really amazing team and this is definitely down to them.”

Rivals in the North East category of the awards were The Kingslodge Inn in Durham and The Craster Arms in Northumberland.

The National Pub and Bar Awards awards are organised by Pub and Bar Magazine and its editor Tristan O’hana said that all the finalist pubs “represent all that is great” about the modern trade.

This is a fantastic award for us to win, particularly when it’s one that is chosen by our industry.
