Dan looks to be the man for the Heed

- By JEFF BOWRON

GATESHEAD return to action eight weeks after lifting the Vanaramanational League North title in a pre-season friendly at Sunderland.

Today’s Academy of Light clash is a 60-minute training-ground affair, both clubs having had just a week back on the training ground.

The Tynesiders could have four new faces in their squad with Wrexham midfielder Dan Jarvis believed to have agreed to join the club.

A product of the Stoke City Academy Midlander Jarvis turned down the chance to stay at wealthy National League title favourites Wrexham.

Gateshead are looking for another midfielder after Jack Hunter and Danny Greenfield rejected new terms to link up with FC Halifax Town and Spennymoor Town.

Jarvis trained on Tyneside this week with three new Heed summer signings - Lewis Knight, Tom Allan and Kenton Richardson already at the International Stadium.

“There was an offer for another year at Wrexham,” said Jarvis, who was limited to five starts for the Welsh outfit last season.

“However, at the end of the day I had to look at my career and what good would it do me sitting on the bench or maybe even in the stands next year.

“I just thought it was better for me to move on and try and play some football, because that is what I need to do.

“I want to be starting games not coming off the bench and am a creative midfielder who can make chances and score goals.”

Jarvis missed two months in mid-season due to an ankle injury and was a late substitute in Wrexham’s FA Trophy final defeat against Bromley at Wembley.
