TWO young burglars were seen stamping on and kicking a man in the head during a brawl outside a Byker pub.

Brandon Murphy, 20, and Harvey Scott, 20, were both involved in a fight outside The Raby on Shields Road on September 1 last year.

The duo were captured on CCTV jointly attacking a man and stamping on his head as he lay on the ground.

Murphy, of Lawnsdowne Crescent, Gosforth, Newcastle, and Scott, of Cheviot Mount, Byker, jointly appeared at Newcastle Crown Court via link to be sentenced for affray.

Murphy also appeared to be sentenced for a non-dwelling burglary, Scott being sentenced for a dwelling burglary and criminal damage.

Both men had pleaded guilty to the charges at a previous hearing.

Joe Culley, prosecuting, said in April last year Murphy, along with another person, stole a bike worth £1,700 from the hallway of a home which belonged to a Deliveroo driver.

He said: “The victim was relaxing at home when he heard a disturbance.

“He went to check the hallway and his bike was missing. CCTV showed two males making off.”

Police were called and chased Murphy, who was arrested after abandoning the bicycle and was found hiding behind a sofa in a garden. Months later,

on September 1, both Murphy and Scott were involved in an affray after they had been drinking at The Raby.

The pair went outside to smoke when a fight broke out with a lone man.

Both defendants began fighting with the man and CCTV showed Scott was on top of him at one point.

Murphy also punched the man to the back of the head, the court heard.

A few months later, on December 5, Scott went on to burgle a ground-floor flat in Walker and rifled through a handbag before stealing a bank card.

A wallet and keys were also taken and the home owner returned to find blood “smeared” about the property.

Scott went on to use the victim’s bank card at a Mcdonalds in Byker. He was seen on CCTV using the card and the DNA from the blood found at the scene of the burglary matched his.

The court heard on January 9 this year Scott also caused damage worth around £700 after kicking in a glass door panel at a premises in Byker.

The barristers defending the defendants were not required to fully mitigate on their behalf after the judge indicated he would pass suspended prison sentences for both.

Murphy was given a 15-month prison sentence, suspended for two years and ordered to complete 30 rehabilitation days. He must also pay a £50 penalty.

Scott was given 21 months prison, suspended for two years, and must also complete 30 rehabilitation days.
