One Brexit lie leads to another lie

- A.W.GOSFORTH

JOHN Hodgkins (July 8) accuses me of inflicting on him a whole raft of opinions he never had. I did not and I also did not agree that the number on the Brexit bus would not have changed people’s voting intentions.

I asked the question that if he was prepared to accept the lie on the side of a bus, was he prepared to accept other lies such as there would be no border down the Irish Sea and that Brexit is ‘done’? It seems the answer is yes, which I find very sad and to me it means that if you have to lie to achieve your objective there is something fundamentally wrong with that objective.

As for the financial benefits of being in the EU the OBR forecasts that our economy will be 4% worse off due to leaving. Even if they are wrong it would be a leap to say it would be better off.

We have to consider the financial loss and damage to the economy caused by the labour shortages in agriculture, abattoirs, and veterinary services with animals being culled in their thousands, food rotting in the ground and on the trees. All these things together with more red tape will cause shortages and an increase in prices for consumers.

All because some were led to believe that EU immigrant workers were taking UK workers’ jobs and we couldn’t control our borders when in fact we always had control over EU immigration – see Clause A in the Freedom of Movement of Persons headed ‘Rights and Obligations.’

We never hear either about the thousands of jobs in the financial sector that have relocated to the EU costing the Exchequer billions of pounds.

What financial damage, as well as damage to people’s wellbeing, has been caused by the shortages of staff in hospitality, businesses going to the wall, the NHS, care in the community and in care homes?

We may no longer pay membership fees to the EU but taking other factors into consideration we may well have been better off financially by remaining members and retained our standing in the world.
